Our guide to kicking off fall the right way.
As the temperatures start to dip (maybe it will happen this weekend?), we won't be able to spend our time in the water or sunbathing. We will need new ideas on what we can do with our kids. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Of course, you can't miss out on this fall staple. A few of our favorite places are Libby + Sons in Limerick, Thompson's Orchard in New Gloucester, Ricker Hill in Turner, + if you are up for an adventure, Sewall Organic Orchard in Lincolnville. Don't forget the apple cider donuts for the ride home! They may or may not be the main reason to go apple picking.
September kicks off fair season around Maine. Starting with one of the best fairs is the Common Ground Fair which is happening this weekend. Run by Maine Organic Farmers + Gardners Association, it puts a focus on sustainable living. There is a great area for kids + awesome feel-good food for everyone. Following that is the Cumberland Fair (September 25 - October 1), kicking off the more traditional of fall fairs. Think comfort foods, rides + games, + farm animals. The Fryeburg Fair is October 2-9, wrapping up the big ones of the season.
Whether it is an afternoon drive through the neighborhood listening to the families favorite music or a day long trip north, getting out + seeing the leaves change is pretty spectacular. Make a game out of it with your family: make plans to get out around the same time each week to see the difference in the color of the leaves. Have your kids draw pictures or make lists of the colors + compare the differences between each week.
Ride the Pumpkin Train
You will have to wait until the end of October for this one, but it will be worth making plans for. Jump on the train at the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad + see Casco Bay in all its glory. Make sure you leave time for the kids to explore the museum + paint a pumpkin to bring home!
A Fall Beach Day
Feel like you have been spending more time inside? The beach is the perfect place to run around + get rid of a little extra energy. It is a great place to breath in some fresh fall air + smell that sweet ocean smell we sometimes forget about after summer is over. Pack a sweater, a picnic lunch, + a towel or blanket + set off for an all day (or just an hour long) adventure. Some of our favorite beaches are Willard Beach, Popham Beach, Reid State Park, Higgins Beach, + Cresent Beach.
Take a trip to Mackworth Island
There are not many places where you can follow a path around an island, build a fairy house, hang out on the beach, watch the wildlife, + see the trees change color. Mackworth Island has all of this + more.
Spend the day seeing the animals, having lunch + ice cream, + checking out the barn. Starting in October, you can take a wagon ride to pick your own pumpkin!
